Washington Square Park Idea Development

Washington Square Park Idea Development

The following are sketches I created, outlining the various aspects of the park, and informing my process.
This is the base sketch I started with. It outlines the overall shape of the park, and the major walking paths

This sketch identifies the major foliage and individual trees in the park.

This skech identifies various landmarks in the park, including statues, chessboards, restrooms, the dog parks, and the iconic Arch.

This sketch identifies areas used by the public, formally or informally. For example, the southeast corner has a series of metal fences that are sufficiently isolated from park benches as to provide enough space to lock up a bicycle. Additionally, the area surrounding the fountain is cicrcular, which lends itself to performance, as the audience can easily distribute itself into a semi-circle around the acts.

This sketch outlines the problem areas within the park. There is a major imbalance in the usage of the park, with some areas being avoided entirely, while others are filled with groups congregating (such as the northwest quadrant). By identifying these areas, I was able to think through ways of redistributing social activity throughout the park.
